It's Time for Real Reform
Tell President Obama: It's Time for Real Reform. 5,061 reports of sexual assault is too many. One is too many.
Dear President Obama,
You have given the Pentagon until the end of the year to show progress on the procedure for dealing with the sexual assault epidemic in the military. The Department of Defense's (DOD) most recent study shows that reports of sexual assault increased by over 50% in 2013 -- from 3,374 total reports in 2012 to 5,061 total reports last year.
This increase is a reminder of how much work still needs to be done. 5,061 reports is too many. As you have said yourself: one is too many.
I urge you to take further action. Survivors of sexual violence who serve in our joined forces deserve to be protected from such egregious acts, and sexual predators need to be brought to brought to justice. More reporting is not the end game, justice is the end game.
5,061 reports of sexual assault within the ranks is not a victory and does not resemble meaningful progress.
Please, hold the Pentagon accountable and take action to fix our military's broken justice system. #1is2MANY.
