The Oscar-nominated film, The Invisible War, was the inspiration behind the development of the Artemis Rising Invisible War Recovery Program -- an intensive 15-day residential treatment program especially designed for military sexual trauma (MST) survivors. The program combines a variety of non-pharmaceutical healing methods that are evidence based and highly effective for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We utilize Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Somatic Experiencing (SE), and therapeutic Equine Therapy in group and individual sessions. Trauma-informed yoga, meditation, acupuncture and recreational activities compliment the reprocessing therapies and create a comprehensive in-depth treatment for MST. The program has been specifically designed to reduce the symptoms of posttraumatic stress resulting from military sexual assault (MSA), such as intrusive thoughts, hypervigiliance, avoidant behavior, sleep disturbance/nightmares, depression, and anxiety.
A generous grant from the Artemis Rising Foundation combined with individual donations, allows us to offer the program free of charge to MST survivors. We have three programs scheduled for 2014 -- in March, June and October. All of the programs will take place at the Boulder Crest Retreat in Bluemont, VA -- a beautiful 37-acre retreat center built specifically to help wounded warriors heal.
In order to validate the effectiveness of this groundbreaking program, independent researchers are collecting clinical data before, during, and after the treatment to assess the program's success in reducing the symptoms of trauma.
